What is America...Calamus Accepted into the 'Art and Poetic Text' Exhibition at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod

I’m thrilled to share that my piece, What is America...Calamus, has been accepted into the Art and Poetic Text exhibition at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod. The show will run from April 11–29, 2023, and celebrates the symbiosis of poetry and art, an exploration of how these two forms can interact in surprising, layered ways.

About My Accepted Piece: What is America...Calamus

What is America...Calamus is a 16 x 16 mixed media weaving created from pages of Walt Whitman’s Calamus poems, part of his famous Leaves of Grass. This piece is part of my America Is . . . series, where I explore the meaning of America through the words of its great writers and thinkers.

The Calamus poems delve into themes of love, companionship, and the deep bonds between individuals, making them a powerful reflection of Whitman’s views on America’s social fabric. By shredding and re-weaving these pages, I reflect on the complexity of American identity and the way in which intimate relationships contribute to the broader narrative of community and belonging. This piece continues my exploration of how literature shapes and reflects the evolving nature of America.
